Mantra : A positive phrase or affirmative statement that you say to yourself for the purpose of motivation or encouragement.
I love Mantras.
Last week I shared this one -
This is what it feels like to get better.
It's a mantra that's been helping me with self discipline.
Specifically, the above mantra has helped me overcome the pain of doing the daily hard, but good for me, things that will lead towards achieving long-term goals.

I noticed that at first this mantra worked like magic.
But after a week or so, the effect started to wear off.
It got me thinking that when it comes to getting ourselves to do the things we want ourselves to do, we're like small children.
For kids, a strategy or reward works for a while to get them to do the things we want them to, but after a while the novelty wears off.
To get yourself to act in the ways you aspire to, you've got to keep yourself on your toes. You've got to constantly mix it up.
You don't need one tool, you need an arsenal of tools.
This week I have a new self discipline strategy to keep you tracking on your daily good-for-you choices and actions.
It's an excerpt from my new mini course "The Self Discipline Challenge".

Here's the strategy:
When you set an intention, a goal, or make a promise to yourself, make your motivation to follow through with it about nothing else than the sheer fact that you told yourself you would.
- MAKE YOUR DAILY MANTRA -
My word is my bond.
THE BEST FEELING!
There's no better feeling than becoming someone you can rely on to do the things you say you're going to do.
A big part of self confidence is being able to trust yourself. To know you've got your own back. That you won't let yourself down.
Self-trust comes from doing small hard things on repeat.
The way you gain trust in yourself is the same way you gain trust in other people.
By their actions, or by your actions.
You know how much you value the people you can rely on in your life. The people you have confidence in, and you know they will be there for you.
Building self discipline is about being that person for yourself too!
Atomic Habits author James Clear cleverly sums it up in his quote -
"Every action you take is like a vote for the type of person you want to become."
In chapter 2 of Atomic Habits he says,
Ultimately, your habits matter because they help you become the type of person you wish to be. They are the channel through which you develop your deepest beliefs about yourself.
YOUR ACTION ITEM #1
Repeat these words: "My word is my bond", regularly throughout the day.
Follow through on the promises you make to yourself.
eg. You said you'd get up early to exercise, meditate, journal, make a healthy breakfast, whatever it is ... but when your alarm goes off, you're not so keen. Repeat "My word is my bond" and get up, because you said you would.
Make your motivation to follow through be about nothing else than the sheer fact that you told yourself you would.
If you do this, your rewards will be twofold:

A great way to remember useful strategies, like this one, throughout the day and in those crucial moments of choice, is to set up a reminder on your phone lockscreen.
